Video Games Can Make You Smarter — Gray Matter Discussion

Just finishing my thesis on violent games and their relation to real world violence. Several studies were taken into account, the most interesting of which was the TED talk by Gabe Zichermann, where he discussed gamification primarily.

While this doesn’t relate to the violence factor in my paper, the gray matter discussion towards the middle of the video does, showing that learning through games actually does increase gray matter in the brain.

Gray matter being the acceleration of fluid intelligence, what helps us problem solve.

To put it simply, a game like Portal 2 will help you expand your gray matter, problem solve quicker and more accurately, and release dopamine in the brain, which activates that feeling of pleasure and accomplishment.

Watch this TED talk if you have the time, it’s great.
